Elon Musk counters Verizon CEO estimates on Starlink Mobile timeline and cost

Verizon executives warned that building out a competitive Starlink Mobile network could take up to eight years and cost hundreds of billions of dollars, but Elon Musk countered that the deployment will take only two to three years.

Verizon considers competition from SpaceX's Starlink to be legitimate, but costly and time-consuming, according to Business Insider. Verizon CEO Dan Schulman estimated that SpaceX would require four to six years and anywhere from $300 billion to $500 billion to build out a Starlink Mobile carrier network capable of competing with terrestrial providers. Additionally, Barron's reported that Verizon expects it could take up to eight years for SpaceX to assemble the infrastructure necessary to compete directly in mobile wireless.[3][5][2][4][1]

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk disputed those lengthy estimates, stating that the project will take just two or three years. Market commentary noted that the divergence between the estimates stems from Verizon anticipating a traditional ground-up carrier buildout, whereas SpaceX intends to lease existing towers and rely on satellites to fill coverage gaps.[2][4][6][5]

Verizon's CEO says SpaceX needs 4–6 years and up to $500B to build out a Starlink mobile network. Elon Musk: "Will take 2 or 3 years". People doubted him when Tesla was on the brink of bankruptcy, and it became a trillion-dollar company. They doubted reusable rockets until SpaceX landed them. Taking on terrestrial telcos? Betting against him usually doesn't age well.

$VZ CEO says Starlink Mobile would take ~5 years and cost ~$400B to build while Elon Musk says $SPCX can get it done in just 2 to 3 years. The big difference is that Verizon is estimating a traditional carrier buildout while SpaceX plans to lease existing towers and use satellites to fill coverage gaps rather than build everything from scratch.
