Qualcomm Chief Executive Cristiano Amon reported that artificial intelligence companies are starting to focus directly on smartphones and asking Qualcomm to support running local 100-billion-parameter models continuously by 2028, according to tech journalist Alex Heath and industry reports.[1][2][3][5]

Amon stated that always-on on-device models could power autonomous AI assistants that navigate apps, understand personal context, anticipate user needs, and carry out complex tasks on behalf of phone owners. Comparing the shift to an iPod moment and the early iPhone era, when third-party applications came to define the platform, Amon noted that autonomous AI agents will similarly transform the mobile user experience and trigger a major smartphone upgrade supercycle.[4][5]

Amon expects these capabilities to capture pent-up demand from consumers who delayed upgrading their devices due to elevated memory prices. However, industry analysis highlights that ongoing challenges surrounding memory costs and smartphone battery life may present hurdles for running continuous, intensive on-device AI.[3][5]
