A new report from the Treasury Department's Office of the Comptroller of the Currency revealed that all nine of the largest U.S. national banks debanked customers because of their political beliefs, religious views, or lawful business activities between 2020 and 2025.[1][3][4]

According to CoinGape, the regulator's findings followed a supervisory review showing that nine major banks maintained explicit policies discouraging banking services for the cryptocurrency sector between 2020 and September 2025. CoinMarketCap also reported that digital asset firms were among the clients debanked for lawful activities or political beliefs during this timeframe.[2][4]

The practice of debanking has drawn sharp criticism across multiple sectors, according to CBS News. President Trump has claimed that debanking systematically discriminates against conservatives, while cryptocurrency investors have voiced complaints that financial institutions shut down accounts simply because they are uncomfortable serving clients in the digital asset industry.[3]
