Artificial intelligence startup Character.AI has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States, according to reports from Reuters, CBS News, and CNBC. The chatbot provider's chief executive attributed its financial collapse to "significant legal, regulatory and operational headwinds," while CNBC reported that the company specifically cited mounting costs and litigation. The bankruptcy follows lawsuits alleging the company's companion chatbot application played a role in teen suicides and self-harm attempts, alongside years of safety concerns and legal disputes.[3][10][2][6][7]

In tandem with the filing, Character.AI agreed to sell assets to Disney for $20 million, placing the entertainment giant first in line for the startup's key assets. According to Neowin, the proposed transaction includes granting Disney a $20 million non-exclusive intellectual property license. Analytics Insight reported that the agreement covers selected intellectual property and legal claims.[1][3][5][4][9]

Character.AI plans to continue operating its platform as it works to complete the sale, and an upcoming court-supervised auction could potentially draw higher competing bids. However, the service's future remains deeply precarious: Business Insider and Neowin reported that Character.AI will wind down and shut down the platform entirely if the sale process does not yield a bid large enough to maintain operations.[3][9][8][4]
