Australia's ASIC proposes strict crypto platform rules ahead of 2027 rollout
Australia's corporate regulator has opened public consultation on proposed regulatory standards for crypto platforms, including strict capital baselines and trading curbs ahead of an April 2027 rollout.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) is seeking feedback on proposed operational standards for digital asset platforms ahead of an April 2027 regulatory rollout. The consultation follows Parliament's passage of digital asset legislation in April and targets asset holding, custody, trading, settlement, licensing, and broader customer protection to safeguard financial stability.[6][2][4][3]
Under the proposed framework, Australia is considering banning crypto exchanges from trading against their own users. Regulators are also reviewing capital requirements, including a proposal that would require platforms operating without a custody concession to hold at least A$14 million in net tangible assets. That model features an A$200,000 custody floor alongside asset and revenue tests, as well as strict standards for external custodians. All three proposed regulatory models remain open for consultation.[1][7][5][8]
The watchdog has already received more than 140 applications from firms aiming to provide crypto-related financial services in Australia. The public consultation period is open through Nov. 27, 2026.[2][8]
