Zcash sets NU7 upgrade for November 5 as token rallies past $1,300

Zcash developers have agreed on block 3,543,405 for the NU7 network activation around November 5, 2026, an upgrade that will reduce block times to 25 seconds, phase out the Sprout privacy pool, and direct 60% of transaction fees into a reserve.

Zcash protocol developers have agreed to activate Network Upgrade 7 (NU7) at block 3,543,405, targeting mainnet deployment around November 5, 2026. The upgrade reduces Zcash's block confirmation target from 75 seconds to 25 seconds, tripling payment confirmation speeds.[2][3][7][8]

The upgrade introduces significant structural and tokenomic shifts. NU7 will temporarily divert 60% of each block's transaction fees into a reserve, with miner disbursements slated to begin around February 2031 to preserve the network's existing mining reward halving schedule. In addition, NU7 will retire Zcash's original Sprout privacy system, rendering any tokens left in the legacy pool permanently unspendable unless moved prior to activation.[4][8][10]

Before NU7 can take effect, the agreed activation height must be integrated into node software, and node synchronization work remains pending. As of October 21 at 08:00 UTC, the proposal had not yet been merged into the deployment specification.[1][8]

Zcash (ZEC) rallied between 11% and 12% following developer agreement on the upgrade height, trading around $1,270 before reclaiming $1,300. According to Analytics Insight, the price increase lifted Zcash into the top 10 cryptocurrencies, reaching a market capitalization of approximately $21.4 billion.[1][3][4][5][6][9][11]

bitcoin's around $83K, but honestly it's not the most interesting thing right now ZEC jumped 11% after devs locked in the NU7 activation height. block times drop from 75 seconds to 25, so payments confirm 3x faster. and 60% of fees go into a reserve that pays out over time that's what i pay attention to. price gets the headlines, but the stuff changing under the hood matters more then i checked hashdex's data on bitcoin's bear market we're 359 days in. the last three lasted 361, 377 and 411 days short-term holders now own just 16% of BTC supply, the lowest since january 2023 does that mean the bottom is in? no. but it makes me wonder how much selling pressure is really left the fed meets oct 27–28. before that, i want to see BTC reclaim $84K until then, i'm watching. no need to chase every move.
