The US Department of Homeland Security has ordered all federal civilian agencies to strip Chinese artificial intelligence application DeepSeek from their IT networks, according to reports from The Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg. The directive bars civilian government agencies from using any DeepSeek technology, products, or services, and prohibits future procurement across the federal civilian apparatus.[1][3][5][8]

US officials cited national security risks for the restriction, warning that sensitive data could be routed to China and that the software might contain malware, Reuters reported. The ban also covers any software tools or products developed on top of DeepSeek's models.[2][4][6][7]

The mandate follows days after the release of DeepSeek's latest AI model, as the Chinese startup's low-cost, open-weight models mount mounting competition for Silicon Valley developers. It also comes alongside other US scrutiny of Chinese tech infrastructure, including an upcoming Federal Communications Commission vote on October 29 regarding whether to bar Chinese laboratories from testing American electronics.[2][5][8]
