SpaceX seeks approval for 32.4-mile Florida pipeline to fuel Starship launches

SpaceX has proposed constructing a 32.4-mile natural gas pipeline in Brevard County, Florida, to supply methane for Starship launches from Cape Canaveral.

SpaceX is seeking regulatory approval to build a 32.4-mile natural gas pipeline in Brevard County, Florida, to supply methane fuel for Starship launches from Cape Canaveral, according to reports by Reuters and Bloomberg. The regulatory application was submitted in September by Coastal Connect, a company that is part of SpaceX, seeking to connect into an existing interstate pipeline route via Florida Gas Transmission.[1][2][3][4]

Starship rockets burn liquid methane, and the company stated in its filing that truck deliveries and local lines are insufficient to support its intended launch frequency. The proposed line would provide a continuous fuel supply to replace dependence on liquefied natural gas brought in by truck, though SpaceX would still need on-site facilities to liquefy the incoming gas for flight operations.[1][2]

The Florida project mirrors similar fuel logistics efforts at SpaceX's Texas site, where the company has requested an eight-mile gas pipeline. Alongside the infrastructure proposals, SpaceX is also hiring gas traders to manage its fuel procurement.[2]

Key facts

  • Coastal Connect, an entity operating as part of SpaceX, asked Florida regulators in September to approve a 32.4-mile natural gas pipeline in Brevard County.
  • The proposed pipeline would tap into an existing interstate line and connect with Florida Gas Transmission to transport fuel toward Cape Canaveral.
  • SpaceX stated that truck deliveries and local gas lines cannot supply enough methane to sustain its planned Starship launch rate.
  • SpaceX will still require liquefaction infrastructure at the launch site to convert the incoming natural gas into rocket fuel.
  • SpaceX has requested a separate 8-mile pipeline for its launch facility in Texas and is currently hiring natural gas traders.

馃嚭馃嚫 Elon wants a gas pipe into Cape Canaveral, so Starship isn't waiting on trucks to bring the fuel Coastal Connect, a company that's part of SpaceX, asked Florida in September to approve a 32.4-mile line in Brevard County, off the existing interstate pipeline. Starship burns liquid methane. In the request, the company says truck deliveries and the local lines can't cover the launch rate they want. They have asked for a shorter version, 8 miles, at the Texas site too, and they are hiring gas traders. Source: Reuters, @SpaceX / Writer: Lucas
