Securities and Exchange Commission Commissioner Hester Peirce, known in the crypto sector as 'Crypto Mom,' stepped down on Oct. 2 after about eight to nine years at the agency. Ahead of her departure, Peirce reflected on her tenure in an interview with The Block, addressing her work on crypto regulation, unfinished goals, developer protections, financial privacy, and intermediaries.[1][3][4][6][8][9]

Peirce's exit leaves seven empty commissioner seats across both the SEC and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, reducing their collective leadership to only three officials. According to BSCNews, Chair Paul Atkins and Mark Uyeda remain as the SEC's only commissioners, while the CFTC has just one commissioner, Chair Michael Selig, following the exit of Caroline Pham.[2][5][7][9]

The three remaining leaders are tasked with overseeing aspects of the approximately $3 trillion crypto industry. Crypto Briefing reported that Peirce had served as crypto's most prominent regulatory ally at the SEC, noting that her departure leaves the agency with a narrowed perspective that could slow progress on clear digital asset guidelines and delay key regulatory actions.[4][5][6][7]

US Crypto Regulation Faces a Leadership Gap Hester Peirce will leave the SEC on October 2 after serving as a commissioner for about eight years. Her departure will leave Chair Paul Atkins and Mark Uyeda as the agency’s only remaining commissioners. The CFTC already has just one commissioner, Chair Michael Selig, following Caroline Pham’s departure. That leaves three commissioners combined across two agencies responsible for significant parts of US financial oversight. The leadership gap comes as both agencies continue developing crypto rules without new congressional legislation.
