Brazilian state-controlled energy producer Petrobras has built two research-stage applications on the Cardano blockchain to record environmental claims tied to sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel, according to the Cardano Foundation. The tools, developed alongside Rio de Janeiro's Pontifical Catholic University (PUC-Rio), are designed to enhance transparency, counter greenwashing, and prevent emissions reductions from being counted twice across fuel supply chains.[3][4][2][5]

The aviation tool manages sustainable aviation fuel attributes using a Book-and-Claim model, which separates the environmental benefit from physical fuel delivery. Under this setup, each attribute is minted on Cardano as a standardized CS-SAF token carrying metadata aligned with the CORSIA international aviation offsetting framework. The tokens can be transferred and retired, ensuring that a claim cannot be reused. Travelers can calculate fuel allocations based on flight routes and receive certificates traceable to the original fuel certificate.[3][4]

The second application targets Petrobras' renewable diesel brand, Diesel R. Developed with PUC-Rio's Ledger Labs, the proposed model records checkpoints across fuel production, transport, and end use to assist with Scope 3 indirect emissions reporting. Cardano Foundation LATAM business development lead Rafael Fraga noted that public blockchain can build trust into the energy transition by design, although disclosures from the foundation did not provide transaction volumes, revenue metrics, or a schedule for commercial deployment.[3][4][1]

Key facts

  • Petrobras built two research-stage blockchain applications on Cardano to track environmental claims for sustainable aviation fuel and Diesel R renewable diesel.
  • The applications were created through an R&D collaboration between Petrobras, the Cardano Foundation, and PUC-Rio's Ledger Labs.
  • The sustainable aviation fuel application uses a Book-and-Claim structure and issues CS-SAF tokens with metadata aligned to CORSIA standards to prevent double-counting.
  • The Diesel R application is a proposed model logging checkpoints across production, transport, and use to assist with Scope 3 emissions reporting.
  • The project builds on a partnership that began with staff education workshops in December 2023 and an April 2025 renewable fuel research agreement.
  • The Cardano Foundation's announcement did not disclose a timeline for commercial rollout, transaction volumes, or revenue numbers.

Petrobras Turns to Cardano to Track Green Claims on Jet Fuel and Renewable Diesel Petrobras , Brazil’s state-controlled energy company, has built two research-stage blockchain applications on Cardano to record the environmental claims tied to its sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel, the Cardano Foundation announced on Wednesday. Both came out of a research and development partnership between Petrobras, the Swiss not-for-profit Cardano Foundation and Rio de Janeiro’s Pontifical Catholic University ( PUC-Rio ). The goal is to make emissions and fuel lifecycle data easier to check, as airlines and passengers look for ways to verify green fuel claims. Get Unchained’s crypto news in your inbox with the free Unchained Daily newsletter . One Credit, One Claim The first tool covers sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) , a lower-carbon jet fuel that works in existing aircraft and airport infrastructure. It runs on a Book-and-Claim model, which splits the fuel’s environmental benefit from the physical fuel so that the benefit can be credited to an airline, company or traveler even if the fuel was produced or used somewhere else. According to the foundation’s case study , each SAF attribute is issued on Cardano as a standardized token called CS-SAF , with metadata aligned to CORSIA, the carbon offsetting scheme for international aviation. The tokens can be minted, transferred and retired, which is meant to stop the same benefit from being counted twice. Passengers can type in their departure and arrival airports, work out the matching CS-SAF amount and receive a certificate showing their route, distance and allocation, linked to the original fuel certificate. Tracking Diesel R The second tool targets Diesel R , Petrobras’ renewable diesel brand, and was built with PUC-Rio. The foundation described it as a proposed model that logs checkpoints as the fuel is produced, transported and used, building a single record of its lifecycle. That record is aimed at Scope 3 reporting, which covers indirect emissions across a company’s value chain and often depends on data held by suppliers and logistics firms. “The energy transition will depend as much on trust as it does on new fuels,” said Rafael Fraga , LATAM business development lead at the Cardano Foundation. “Public blockchain gives us the opportunity to make that trust part of the system by design.” The announcement did not give a timeline for commercial rollout of either tool. From Training to Traceability The work extends a relationship that started in December 2023, when the Cardano Foundation agreed to run blockchain education workshops for Petrobras staff through Petrobras University, a program open to more than 40,000 employees . In April 2025, the foundation announced a research collaboration with PUC-Rio’s Ledger Labs that would focus first on blockchain uses for renewable fuels, with Petrobras as an industry partner. Brazil’s largest energy giant tests Cardano to fix carbon double-counting Petrobras, Brazil's state-controlled energy company, is testing Cardano to track sustainable aviation fuel benefits and prevent double-counting. The Cardano Foundation said on Sept. 30 that an ongoing research and development collaboration had delivered applications for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and Diesel R, Petrobras' renewable fuel brand. The SAF project addresses a problem that arises when the buyer of a fuel's environmental benefit is different from the buyer or user of the fuel itself. Its Book-and-Claim model lets an airline, company, or passenger receive that benefit even when the SAF is produced or used elsewhere. Petrobras developed the SAF platform with PUC-Rio University's Ledger Labs and the Cardano Foundation. According to the Foundation's case study , it represents SAF environmental attributes as standardized CS-SAF tokens on Cardano. Those tokens can be created, transferred, checked, and retired. Retirement prevents the same attribute from being claimed again, while the digital record traces the allocation back to the original fuel certificate. The crypto analogy is double spending: preventing reuse of a digital asset, applied here to an environmental claim. Travelers can enter departure and destination airports, calculate a CS-SAF allocation and receive a certificate showing their route, distance and allocation, the Foundation says. That claim remains linked to the original SAF certificate. The tokens carry metadata aligned with CORSIA, the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation. Related Reading Cardano spent years looking slow. Now that may help it win in crypto’s rule-heavy era In guidance published June 16 , the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials says Book-and-Claim changes neither the physical fuel a buyer uses nor its associated emissions. Airlines should disclose supported reductions separately from operational emissions. Different value-chain participants can make distinct claims, as long as their disclosures do not misrepresent the overall reduction. Cardano usage beyond aviation The Diesel R project, developed with PUC-Rio, proposes checkpoints across production, transportation and use. Its aim is a continuous fuel-lifecycle record that could support Scope 3 reporting, which covers indirect emissions across a company's wider value chain. That would connect information held by suppliers and logistics providers, giving emissions reporting a more traceable supply-chain history. The Foundation describes this architecture as a proposed model within the R&D work. The SAF platform illustrates how Cardano can record the allocation and retirement of environmental benefits. Commercial use remains unquantified, as the Foundation's disclosures provide no transaction volumes or revenue figures.
