OpenAI launches GPT-6.1 Terra with enhanced computer-use capabilities and lower pricing
OpenAI has released GPT-6.1 Terra, a faster and cheaper model built to navigate desktop applications, understand screens, and automate tasks across its API, ChatGPT Work, and Codex.
OpenAI rolled out GPT-6.1 Terra, positioning the mid-tier model as a faster, lower-cost option built for agentic tasks and visual reasoning. According to OpenAI, the model is engineered to read screen content, navigate and act across applications, and automate everyday workflows over the course of a full workday while delivering cleaner, more natural writing.[11][2][1][4][9]
Model specifications visible on OpenAI's platform show a 1,050,000-token context window, up to 128,000 maximum output tokens, reasoning token support with multiple effort tiers up to maximum, and a June 1, 2026 knowledge cutoff. The model is priced at $1 per million input tokens, $0.05 per million cached tokens, and $5 per million output tokens—a cost reduction of up to 50% compared to GPT-5.6 Terra alongside sharply lower error rates.[10][6][4][8]
OpenAI highlighted significant performance gains, claiming that at max effort, Terra is more than three times as token-efficient as Claude Opus 5.5 and one-fourth the price per token, leading to an estimated ninefold cost reduction per task. OpenAI also asserted that Terra executes computer tasks more than three times faster than both GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. The model is live through the API as gpt-6.1-terra and is deploying across ChatGPT Work and Codex for Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users.[7][5][6][3][8]
