OpenAI launches GPT-6 Sol and Luna models with 50% price cut
OpenAI has released two new artificial intelligence models, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, featuring permanent 50% API price reductions, enhanced inference efficiency, and reported reductions in model error rates.

OpenAI has expanded its frontier model lineup with the launch of GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, reducing API prices by 50% compared with GPT-5.6 pricing without an expiration date. Under the new rate structure, GPT-6 Sol costs $2 per 1 million input tokens and $10 per 1 million output tokens, while GPT-6 Luna costs $0.10 per 1 million input tokens and $0.50 per 1 million output tokens.[14][3][9][7][13]
OpenAI stated that the models build on GPT-6 Astra to deliver faster and more affordable performance at scale, citing improvements in inference and caching efficiency. According to OpenAI, GPT-6 Sol makes roughly half as many mistakes as GPT-5.6 Sol, while Luna matches GPT-5.6 Sol performance at about 1% of the cost. Chief executive Sam Altman described the releases as notable upgrades in coding, intelligence, and computer use, while Crypto Briefing separately reported that GPT-6 Sol (Max) reached a 7.7% net improvement.[14][10][11][12][4]
The new models are rolling out across the API, ChatGPT, and Codex, with Free and Go users able to access Luna through the desktop application. Despite OpenAI's claims, independent evaluations from Artificial Analysis indicated that benchmark intelligence and coding scores were roughly flat compared to GPT-5.6, with performance gains on some benchmarks counterbalanced by regressions on others. Reports also noted that the models reduce deceptive behaviors, though questions remain concerning observability and monitoring.[1][2][5][6]
Key facts
- OpenAI released GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, reducing API prices by 50% compared to GPT-5.6 pricing.
- API pricing is set at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens for GPT-6 Sol, and $0.10 input and $0.50 output per million tokens for GPT-6 Luna.
- OpenAI claimed GPT-6 Sol cuts mistake rates in half compared with GPT-5.6 Sol, while GPT-6 Luna delivers equivalent performance to GPT-5.6 Sol at roughly 1% of the cost.
- Artificial Analysis evaluations found that intelligence and coding benchmark scores for Sol and Luna were roughly level with GPT-5.6, with gains on certain evaluations offset by declines on others.
- Crypto Briefing reported that OpenAI's GPT-6 Sol (Max) achieved a 7.7% net improvement while cutting API costs in half.
- GPT-6 Sol and Luna are rolling out via the API, ChatGPT, and Codex, with Luna also made available to Free and Go users in the desktop app.

OpenAI has released two new models, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, built on top of GPT-6 Extra but designed to be faster and more affordable for work at scale. Caching and inference efficiency have improved, and OpenAI is passing those savings along through cheaper API pricing. Both models are rolling out now in ChatGPT and Codex for Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education users, and both are already live in the API. Free and Go users can try Luna in the desktop app as well. OpenAI claims Sol and Luna improve on their GPT-5.6 counterparts in coding, computer use, factuality, and alignment. However, independent evaluations from Artificial Analysis show intelligence and coding scores roughly level with GPT-5.6, with gains on some tests offset by regressions on others.
