OpenAI bugging suspect messaged Saudi royal before arrest, prosecutors say
U.S. prosecutors revealed that an engineer accused of planting a listening device in an OpenAI conference room maintained frequent contact with a Saudi royal who urged him to join a Saudi AI initiative.

Federal prosecutors disclosed that former OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan exchanged frequent WhatsApp messages with an unnamed member of the Saudi royal family throughout 2025 and 2026, including just four days before his arrest. The 35-year-old Saudi Arabian national earned a $385,000 annual salary alongside a $2.2 million equity package at OpenAI before being charged with planting a recording device in an executive conference room in San Francisco.[3][7][9][10][13]
According to court filings reported by CNBC and Quartz, the royal repeatedly attempted to recruit Alfozan to leave the company and join a new Saudi artificial intelligence program, at one point messaging, "Saudi needs you more than the U.S!" Alfozan responded with "100." The Wall Street Journal also reported that the communication centered on job opportunities inside the kingdom.[3][6][8][11][12]
The listening device was allegedly hidden behind a television in a restricted room where OpenAI executives held meetings with government officials around the same period. While prosecutors do not allege that the royal directed Alfozan to plant the bug, they argued in court that he appears to have received considerable support from the Saudi government, noting that a member of the Saudi military paid for business-class flights to fly his wife and three-month-old son out of the United States following his arrest. Prosecutors requested that a judge detain Alfozan without bail due to flight risk.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]
