Elon Musk publicly alleged that unnamed Indian business magnates are obstructing Starlink to protect a monopolistic hold, questioning why the satellite service lacks a license after five years of regulatory compliance.

SpaceX chief executive Elon Musk publicly expressed frustration over Starlink's delayed entry into India, claiming in posts on X that the satellite broadband service is being blocked by "certain oligarchs" intent on protecting their "monopolistic chokehold on the Indian people." Musk called the obstacles "a crime against the people of India" and added, "You can guess who they are." Bloomberg reported that the accusations appeared aimed at telecom billionaires Mukesh Ambani and Sunil Bharti Mittal, while TechCrunch noted Musk specifically questioned whether Ambani was "the real boss of India."[5][10][1][12][3][13]

Musk also questioned why the service has yet to be cleared despite years of regulatory engagement, stating that Starlink is licensed in over 165 countries and has spent five years complying with every domestic law and requirement. Speaking at the India Mobile Congress, Lauren Dreyer, SpaceX's vice president for Starlink business operations, stated the network is ready to launch as soon as final approvals are granted. Dreyer noted SpaceX has already invested in local infrastructure by constructing 20 gateway sites and hundreds of antennas, adapting its operations to meet Indian regulatory and security rules that require storing user data inside the country.[4][6][11][8]

The friction follows prior cooperation between the parties, with SpaceX having signed memoranda of understanding with Indian operators Jio and Airtel in 2025. Following Musk's claims of bias in satellite licensing, the Indian government issued a response addressing his allegations.[2][9]
