A New Mexico court has ordered Meta Platforms to pay $25 billion in civil penalties following a jury verdict finding the social media giant liable for misleading residents and consumers about data privacy. According to reporting by Jonathan Vanian of CNBC, the legal dispute stemmed from the nearly decade-old Cambridge Analytica scandal, with the jury determining Meta deceived Facebook users about how it safeguards and collects personal information.[4][9][10][11][13][8]

The $25 billion assessment represents one of the largest financial penalties in U.S. history and Meta's biggest fine yet. TNW reported that while the company faced potential liability of up to $219 billion, the judge set the penalty at $25 billion, an amount that still exceeds New Mexico's projected 2028 general fund of $14.8 billion. Meta has indicated that it plans to appeal the ruling.[2][3][6][7][11][12]
