Meta and Microsoft curb internal Claude use as they push in-house AI tools
Meta and Microsoft are cutting back employee use of Anthropic's Claude models to rein in rising expenses and steer developers toward their own AI offerings, according to reports by The Information.

Meta and Microsoft, two of Anthropic's largest enterprise customers, are actively working to reduce internal employee use of the Claude model family, according to reporting by The Information. The cutbacks come as both tech giants face mounting AI bills and look to deploy their own competing AI technologies internally, creating an emerging headwind for Anthropic as the startup prepares for an initial public offering.[2][9][7]
Microsoft had initially been on track to spend at least $1 billion annually on internal Anthropic usage, but it has since reduced that spending projection by more than a third, according to reporter Aaron Holmes. The company has also tightened spending by slashing monthly AI usage caps for most employees in its Cloud and AI group from $100,000 to around $10,000 while directing engineers toward non-Anthropic models, a policy shift that has sparked internal employee pushback. The spending cut does not impact customer spending on Anthropic models via Microsoft's cloud tools, which has continued to climb.[3][8][1][5][6]
At Meta, internal users of Claude Code fell by half, dropping from roughly 60,000 workers to about 30,000. While corporate layoffs accounted for a portion of the reduction, a larger factor has been Meta's push to drive employees toward its proprietary coding systems. More than 30,000 employees now use MetaCode and over 6,000 use Muse Code, though Meta still spent over $105 million on Claude Code across a recent 28-day stretch.[4][10][1]
Key facts
- Microsoft lowered its internal Claude spending projection by more than a third after earlier tracking to spend at least $1 billion annually.
- Microsoft cut monthly AI limits for most Cloud and AI group employees from $100,000 to about $10,000 and began steering engineers to non-Anthropic models.
- Meta's Claude Code user base declined from roughly 60,000 employees to 30,000 due to company layoffs and an internal push toward proprietary coding tools.
- Meta counts more than 30,000 users on its MetaCode tool and over 6,000 on Muse Code, while still spending over $105 million on Claude Code over a recent 28-day window.
- Anthropic's internal usage cutbacks at Meta and Microsoft arrive as the AI developer prepares for an initial public offering.

Meta and Microsoft are reportedly cutting employees’ Claude usage to reduce costs (and push their own AI tools.) The Information reports that Microsoft cut its projected annual spending on internal Anthropic usage by more than a third, after earlier estimates put it at at least $1 billion. At Meta, Claude Code users fell from roughly 60,000 to 30,000. Layoffs contributed, but the report identifies the push toward Meta’s own coding tools as the bigger factor. Keep in mind: those news will be calculated for Anthropics upcoming IPO.

$META and $MSFT are cutting internal Claude use as AI bills climb with Microsoft slashing per employee budgets from $100K to $10K a month and Meta pushing Muse Code even as Claude spend stays massive. More companies are going to start treating tokens like a real budget which keeps AI usage growing but puts a lot more pressure on OpenAI and Anthropic pricing.
