Prediction market platform Kalshi has filed with the Commodity Futures Trading Commission seeking approval to offer margin trading on event contracts, which would allow users to trade positions using borrowed funds. The filing was submitted by Kalshi Klear, the company's internal clearing house, in what has been described as a first for regulated U.S. event contract exchanges.[2][3][6][7]

The proposal targets institutional participation and aims to help market makers deepen liquidity by introducing leverage, a practice already prevalent on Wall Street for stocks and futures. Kalshi noted that institutional traders require leverage to take positions in longer-dated event contracts.[1][4][5][8]

Under the proposed framework, margin requirements would be set conservatively above regulatory minimums. In addition, the margin model excludes markets tied to sports, culture, and mentions.[1]
