Days after launching its first foldable smartphone, Apple confirmed that a small number of iPhone Duo units are suffering from inner display damage along the central hinge. According to a statement reported by 9to5Mac and Reuters, the company said it is aware of the issue and that affected customers can contact AppleCare to receive a replacement device.[1][6][2][4]

The response follows complaints from early buyers who reported that their screens cracked within hours or days of receiving the device, which went on sale October 23. Affected users shared photos online showing physical cracks and bright lines of damaged pixels across the folding crease, prompting the nickname Crackgate on social media. While Apple has not confirmed the root cause, one repair firm suggested that a support bar near the hinge may be failing to shift clear during folding, placing excessive stress along the crease.[2][3][5][7][8]

The controversy quickly spread into Apple's supply chain. Shares of South Korean supplier Pineamtech, known as the hinge manufacturer for the iPhone Duo, tumbled more than 15% in a single day. In response to the market reaction, Pineamtech stated that the reported screen damage is unrelated to any defect in its components.[7]

🇺🇸 Apple’s first folding iPhone is already cracking for some buyers. The iPhone Duo started shipping last week and sold out online in minutes, but over the weekend people started posting photos of cracks and lines along the fold. Apple says only a small number of phones are affected, and anyone with the problem can get a replacement through AppleCare. It hasn’t said what’s causing it, but one repair firm thinks a support bar near the hinge may not be moving out of the way when the phone folds, putting stress right where the cracks show up. Fold it gently, folks, at least until the replacement shows up. Source: Reuters / Writer: Daniyal
