Google activates orbital TPU and receives first AI response from space

Google has booted an onboard Tensor Processing Unit on its prototype satellite in orbit, running a Gemma 4 AI model that transmitted a haiku back to Earth under Project Suncatcher.

Google has reached an operational milestone in its orbital computing ambitions after booting up an onboard Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) and receiving its first complete AI-generated response on Earth, according to Google CEO Sundar Pichai. The test was conducted via the company's Project Suncatcher prototype satellite, which launched into orbit aboard a SpaceX rocket on October 1.[9][7][6][10]

The prototype satellite, labeled SUN V1 during pre-launch cleanroom assembly, carries four Google TPU chips. After ground operators transmitted a prompt up to the satellite, the onboard hardware executed Google DeepMind's Gemma 4 model to compose poetry, returning a haiku about being in space back to Earth stations.[5][2][1][8]

Project Suncatcher is exploring whether space-based solar-powered data centers can run AI workloads beyond Earth, potentially alleviating growing terrestrial demands for land and electricity. In orbit, Google is actively evaluating how its proprietary AI processors withstand extreme thermal fluctuations and cosmic radiation.[3][4][5]

Key facts
