GitHub announced that Copilot Fusion is now generally available, introducing an orchestration system designed to manage model selection for coding tasks automatically. Reported by Meredith Shubel of The New Stack, the release relieves software developers from manually picking AI models by allowing users to set an effort level while Copilot Fusion handles the backend model routing. GitHub also released a dedicated GitHub Copilot app.[2][4][5]

The launch took place at GitHub's Universe 2026 conference, where the company also showcased multi-agent Projects, framing the updates around collaborative, multi-agent workflows and AI orchestration in software development. According to The New Stack, an AT&T engineer reported that Copilot Fusion has improved token efficiency.[3][4]

Benchmark data shared alongside the reveal shows Copilot Fusion scoring 60 on the Artificial Analysis Coding Agent Index, positioning it near top-tier models while cutting costs roughly in half compared to standalone runs of Claude Opus 5.5.[1]
