Apple reveals its first touchscreen MacBook Pro with tandem OLED display

Apple unveiled a redesigned MacBook Pro featuring a tandem OLED touchscreen, M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, and a Dynamic Island, reversing years of opposition to touch-enabled laptops.

At its 'Pro and Tell' special event in Los Angeles on October 28, 2026, Apple introduced the 'MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display,' marking the debut of touch controls on the Mac lineup. Available in 14.2-inch and 16.3-inch sizes, the laptop features Apple's first Mac OLED screen, utilizing tandem OLED technology with adaptive 10–120Hz ProMotion and peak HDR brightness reaching up to 2,000 nits.[10][13][12][8][1]

The release reverses Apple's long-standing refusal to build touch-enabled notebooks. Speaking to Wired's Steven Levy in an exclusive early look, Apple hardware executive John Ternus noted that the Mac remains 'first and foremost an indirect input device,' while acknowledging that touch can be 'comfortable and handy.' To accommodate touch input, the laptop incorporates a redesigned hinge for stability, while macOS translates taps into clicks for existing software alongside touch interactions like pinch-to-zoom, drawing, and window snapping.[4][2][9][14][3][8]

The new notebook also introduces the Dynamic Island to the Mac and brings back an illuminated Apple logo after a 10-year absence. The lighter chassis weighs 3 pounds for the 14-inch model and 4 pounds for the 16-inch variant. Internally, the machines are powered by M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, offering unified memory configurations up to 128GB, up to 16TB of storage, and up to 24 hours of battery life.[17][11][3][8][1]

Pricing starts at $2,899 for the 14-inch model with M5 Pro and $3,399 for the 16-inch version, with M5 Max options beginning at $4,499. Preorders opened October 28, 2026, ahead of shipments and in-store retail availability scheduled for November 6, 2026.[8][1][5][15]
