Australian court orders Apple to allow third-party app stores as Fortnite returns to iOS
An Australian federal judge has ordered Apple to open its iOS ecosystem to third-party app stores by March 2027, prompting Epic Games to return Fortnite to the country's App Store.

An Australian federal court has ruled against Apple in an antitrust battle, finding the tech giant engaged in non-competitive conduct and ordering it to ease iOS restrictions. Under the ruling, Apple must permit iPhone users in Australia to install applications via third-party app stores starting March 1, 2027.[4][6][7]
Following the court's decision, Epic Games announced that its flagship battle royale title Fortnite would return to the Australian App Store on Thursday. The decision could offer developers greater latitude to sell software, select alternative payment mechanisms, and distribute applications through rival storefronts.[1][2][5][6]
While Fortnite has arrived back on Australian iOS devices in the wake of the mandate, Apple does not plan to accept the ruling quietly and intends to appeal the decision.[3][7]
