First National Bank (FNB), the retail-banking unit of South Africa's FirstRand Ltd., has launched a cryptocurrency investing service in partnership with licensed exchange VALR. The service allows customers to trade Bitcoin, Ether, XRP, Solana, and USDT directly through FNB's existing share-trading platform, reaching a customer base reported at 8.6 million to nearly 9 million clients.[1][2][3][5][6][9]

Trading is available 24/7 with minimum investments starting at R10. However, the assets operate in a closed environment: users cannot transfer cryptocurrency into or out of the platform, with purchases ringfenced inside the FNB ecosystem rather than transferable to personal external wallets.[1][4][5][8][9]

FNB noted that the launch is a response to expanding customer demand, with additional crypto investment features planned. According to Crypto Briefing, the bank's adoption of crypto trading could help accelerate broader digital asset integration across South Africa and shape regional banking practices.[5][9][10]
