Ethereum validator count falls as staked ether continues to rise

Ethereum's active validator count has dropped substantially even as the total amount of staked ether climbs, driven in part by validator balance consolidation introduced under the Pectra upgrade.

Ethereum has experienced a marked decline in active validator numbers alongside growing volumes of staked ether. According to BSCNews, Ethereum entered 2026 with nearly 975,000 active validators before dropping by roughly 112,000 to around 863,000. Despite that decrease, native staked ETH expanded from about 36.3 million to 43.7 million, with more than 7 million ETH entering staking since the beginning of 2026.[2][3]

Data shared by crypto.news pointed to a similar trajectory, reporting that the validator count decreased from roughly 1.1 million to about 841,100 while staked ETH rose from 29.319 million to 50.790 million. An attached Token Terminal chart tracking the network through October 2026 placed the latest validator count at 839,500 and ecosystem assets staked at $50.6 billion.[1]

BSCNews noted that the decline in validator count does not necessarily indicate falling staking demand, attributing the change to the Pectra upgrade, which enables validators to consolidate their balances while keeping funds locked. However, Crypto Briefing reported that while validator consolidation may enhance Ethereum's network efficiency, it also prompts concerns regarding decentralization and the concentration of control.[2][3]

Key facts

  • Ethereum's active validator count decreased from nearly 975,000 at the start of 2026 to roughly 863,000, a drop of about 112,000 validators, according to BSCNews.
  • Staked ETH rose from about 36.3 million to 43.7 million, adding more than 7 million ETH to staking since the start of 2026, according to BSCNews.
  • The Pectra upgrade allows validators to consolidate balances while keeping ETH locked, meaning fewer validator entries do not necessarily signal declining staking demand.
  • Crypto Briefing reported that validator consolidation may improve network efficiency but raises concerns about decentralization and control concentration.
  • crypto.news reported that the validator count dropped from about 1.1 million to roughly 841,100, while staked ETH rose from 29.319 million to 50.790 million.
  • A Token Terminal chart showed the latest figures at 839,500 validators and $50.6 billion in ecosystem assets staked.

Ethereum Staking Surges While 112,000 Validators Disappear Ethereum started 2026 with nearly 975,000 active validators, compared with roughly 863,000 now. Despite the decline, staked ethereum:native has increased from about 36.3 million to 43.7 million. More than 7 million ETH has entered staking since the start of 2026. Pectra allows validators to consolidate balances while keeping their ETH locked. The change means fewer validator entries do not necessarily indicate reduced staking demand.
