Cohere eyes neocloud partnerships as it raises billions at a $20.5 billion valuation
Artificial intelligence model maker Cohere is raising billions to expand its infrastructure at a $20.5 billion valuation, while tapping neocloud providers rather than building out its own data centers.

Toronto-based artificial intelligence startup Cohere is raising a massive new funding round that values the company at $20.5 billion, roughly tripling its valuation from a year ago. The company completed the first close of a financing round that it expects to total up to $5 billion, according to Bloomberg, while Crypto Briefing reported that the Series E round targets up to C$7 billion.[1][3][4][5][6][7]
The Canadian government is heavily backing the domestic AI developer, agreeing to invest up to $1.14 billion in the round, per Bloomberg, while outlet iPhone in Canada reported the federal commitment at $1.6 billion in taxpayer funds. Additional backing for the round includes chipmaker Nvidia, according to tech outlet AGTP.[1][3][5][6]
Even as capital floods in to expand its compute footprint, Cohere does not plan to build physical data centers from scratch. In an interview with The Information, Chief AI Officer Joelle Pineau said data center construction is outside the firm's core expertise. Instead, Pineau indicated that partnering with the right neocloud providers remains a central part of Cohere's ongoing compute and infrastructure strategy.[2][7]

.@Cohere is raising billions to expand its AI infrastructure, but that doesn't mean it wants to build every data center itself. Cohere Chief AI Officer Joelle Pineau explains why partnering with neocloud providers remains part of the company's compute strategy: "I wouldn't say today our expertise is in building up data centers. There are others who do this really, really well. And so, you know, partnering with a right neo cloud is definitely something we're looking at."
