Summer Mersinger is stepping down as CEO of the Blockchain Association on Oct. 16, with former chief executive Kristin Smith returning as interim CEO while Mersinger stays on as an adviser through year-end.

Summer Mersinger is stepping down as chief executive officer of the Blockchain Association on Oct. 16. Kristin Smith, the crypto advocacy group's founding leader and former CEO, will return to lead the organization on an interim basis. Mersinger will remain with the association as an adviser through the end of the year.[3][4][5][6]

Mersinger, a former Commodity Futures Trading Commission commissioner, joined the Blockchain Association in 2025 after resigning during her second term at the federal regulator. Smith, who is currently the president of the Solana Institute, previously served as the original longtime head of the association.[2][3][6][7]

The leadership change follows key legislative developments for the cryptocurrency sector. Mersinger previously led the organization through the passage of the GENIUS Act, but her departure comes after the crypto Clarity Act fizzled and a CLARITY vote failed following a lengthy congressional dispute.[1][2][4][7]
