Bitcoin drops below $81,000 as broad market rout triggers over $210 million in liquidations

Bitcoin erased its climb toward $85,000, sliding under $81,000 amid a wider market selloff fueled by tech earnings jitters and geopolitical tensions.

Bitcoin suffered a sharp reversal on Thursday, October 22, erasing an overnight rally toward $85,000 and tumbling below key support thresholds. The cryptocurrency initially sank below $83,000, shedding roughly $1,500 in an hour and triggering over $70 million in liquidated long positions, according to market tracker Bull Theory. The decline continued throughout the day, breaking past $82,000 and briefly losing the $81,000 mark as selling pressure intensified.[1][2][3][4][5][12]

The rout rippled across the broader crypto landscape. More than $210 million in crypto long positions were wiped out within a 12-hour span, according to reports by Coin Bureau and Crypto Briefing, as Bitcoin plunged toward $81,000 and Ether dropped beneath $2,500 toward $2,300. Decentralized finance tokens took an even harder hit, with CoinDesk reporting a 6% slide in its DeFi index alongside a 3.5% loss in the CoinDesk 80 index.[7][8][10][13]

The crypto pullback tracked an unravelling in broader risk assets. Weak tech sentiment and renewed doubts surrounding artificial intelligence weighed heavily on equities, with the Nasdaq falling more than 2% after Tesla reported lower-than-expected capital expenditures for the third quarter. In commodities, spot gold dropped roughly 2.7% to $4,025 and silver plunged about 5.8% to near $54.63, while the U.S. 10-year Treasury yield dropped from 5.146% to below 5%. Rising Middle East tensions and surging oil prices also heightened broader macro caution, even as Bloomberg reported that investors continued returning to U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds.[1][3][4][6][7][10][11][15]

Bitcoin has dropped from around $84,800 to $82,200. This isn't happening in isolation. Asian stocks are selling off as AI spending concerns grow, while rising Gulf tensions are pushing oil higher and adding another layer of inflation risk. Risk appetite is weakening, and Bitcoin is feeling it. The key now is whether buyers defend the $82K area or this pullback develops into another leg lower.
