Archive of Our Own goes offline with restoration estimated to take weeks
Popular fan fiction platform Archive of Our Own is facing extended downtime that could last up to a month, though site data reportedly remains intact.
Fan fiction platform Archive of Our Own has gone offline, and administrators estimate that restoring the website could take anywhere from two to four weeks, or up to a month. The extended downtime leaves readers and writers without access to the hub for weeks, prompting fans to share coping survival guides across social platforms.[1][5][6][7]
Reports differ on the exact trigger behind the shutdown. Outlets including Analytics Insight and IGN reported that the Organization for Transformative Works took the platform down for maintenance, whereas WIRED reported that a site update attributed the temporary shutdown to a security incident. Engadget noted that the root cause remained unknown.[1][3][4][6][7]
Despite the prolonged outage, the archive's data is reportedly safe, with the team confirming that stories and bookmarks remain intact. Visitors to the platform are met with an Error 503 service unavailable page stating the archive is down for maintenance and directing users to check @AO3_Status and ao3org for official updates.[1][2][3]
