Anthropic in talks for up to 1GW data center lease requiring at least $40 billion, reports say

Anthropic is in discussions to lease up to 1 gigawatt of data center capacity from Apollo-backed Stream Data Centers, a buildout that could require at least $40 billion in capital investment, according to reporting from The Information.

Anthropic is in early-stage talks to lease up to 1 gigawatt of data center capacity from Stream Data Centers, a developer majority-owned by Apollo Global Management, according to reports by The Information. Data center developers estimate that constructing 1 gigawatt of capacity would require at least $40 billion in capital investment.[3][5][6][7][9]

The facilities could be filled primarily with Google and Broadcom tensor processing units, with Nvidia graphics processing units also considered as an option. Google has additionally been discussed as a possible credit guarantor for the project. Directly leasing facilities and procuring hardware would allow Anthropic to lower its dependence on cloud providers and secure greater control over compute pricing, chip supplies, networking, and server infrastructure.[1][2][4][5][7][8][9]

The talks come after Anthropic signed roughly $531 billion in compute agreements over an 11-month period. Those previous commitments include smaller direct data center leases with Hut 8 and TeraWulf, a 2-gigawatt chip agreement with AMD, and a $35 billion TPU leasing deal supported by Apollo and Blackstone.[2][8][9]

Key facts

  • Anthropic is in early discussions to lease up to 1 gigawatt of data center capacity from Stream Data Centers, which is majority-owned by Apollo.
  • A 1-gigawatt buildout is estimated by data center developers to require at least $40 billion in capital investment.
  • The facilities could be populated mainly with Google and Broadcom TPUs, alongside potential Nvidia GPUs, and Google has been discussed as a potential credit guarantor.
  • Leasing facilities directly is aimed at reducing Anthropic's reliance on cloud providers and granting more control over chip supply, costs, networking, and infrastructure.
  • Anthropic has entered into roughly $531 billion in compute agreements over the past 11 months, including leases with Hut 8 and TeraWulf, an AMD chip deal, and an Apollo- and Blackstone-backed TPU lease.
