Anthropic previews Claude Duet, an autonomous AI agent app for background tasks

Anthropic has unveiled Claude Duet, a standalone AI agent app powered by Opus 5.5 that proactively manages workflows, monitors apps, and carries out tasks even while user devices are shut down.

Anthropic has introduced Claude Duet, an always-on personal agent launched in a research preview for US subscribers on Pro and Max plans. Designed around the flagship Claude Opus 5.5 model, the assistant works proactively across external software rather than waiting for user prompts. Duet runs on a dedicated cloud virtual machine equipped with its own browser, allowing it to complete background assignments even when a user's phone or computer is powered down.[1][3][4][6][8]

The standalone application—available on iOS, Android, and the web—draws skills, memories, and connected services directly from existing Claude accounts. It links with tools including Gmail, Slack, QuickBooks, and Shopify, sending morning summaries, drafting responses, assembling dashboards, and forecasting financials. The agent can also prepare purchases using virtual cards through Stripe Link or Shopify Shop Pay, with future plans to integrate credentials from 1Password.[5][7][8][9][11]

To curb autonomous missteps, Anthropic built safety controls requiring explicit user authorization before Duet sends messages, executes payments, signs documents, or deletes items. Moving money between bank accounts and trading securities are strictly barred. While the tool is free to preview for US waitlist members, background operations draw against regular subscription usage limits, and international access in regions like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE remains unavailable.[1][2][4][8]

    Anthropic wants Claude to stop waiting around for instructions, so its new Claude Duet assistant keeps track of what's happening across your connected apps, spots tasks that need attention and prepares work without being prompted, running on its own cloud VM so it keeps going even when your phone is off.     anthropic just dropped a research preview of claude duet, an agent that keeps working even when your laptop is closed it runs on its own virtual machine, so your devices don't need to stay on. every morning it sends you a quick summary from gmail, slack and quickbooks, checks again every few hours, and only pings you when something actually needs you the approval part is what caught my eye. before it sends, pays, signs or deletes anything, it shows you the plan and waits for your ok. trading securities and moving money between accounts are completely off limits good guardrails. but anthropic admits it can misread conversations or get urgency wrong and earlier this month they shared that a haiku 4.5 agent sent philadelphia police a fake murder tip during a browsing test so here's what i keep wondering will people actually read every approval request? or after a few days, will they just start tapping yes without thinking? because that's where things go wrong it's waitlist-only for pro and max users in the US right now. would you trust it with your inbox?

    BREAKING: @AnthropicAI just launched Duet, its always-on personal agent. It’s the first personal agent I’d call a pro tool. We’ve been testing it for two weeks. I’ve gone from mostly using ChatGPT to roughly 50/50 between ChatGPT and Claude—the most time I’ve spent with Anthropic in close to a year. • It lives in its own app, separate from Claude, on iOS, Android, and the web. This makes it feel clean and easy to understand. • It has channels for specific areas of your work and life rather than just a single chat • It has a todo list so you never lose what you’re working on and you can always see statuses • It allows you to easily write and edit documents, slides, and more all through the app. • It’s not a chief of staff yet. It can see the Claude sessions on my computers but can’t direct them. Its email drafts are worse than dot’s, and voice is transcription only—you can’t have a spoken conversation with it.
