Anthropic has launched internal drug discovery programs after acquiring Mithril Medicine, a one-person biotechnology company developing treatments for two rare forms of muscular dystrophy. According to reports on the acquisition, which took place in July 2026, founder Cody Tranbarger utilized Anthropic's AI model Claude to manage operations, contracts, logistics, and experiments across 11 external laboratories. The approach advanced a potential therapy from an initial concept to promising results in mice in under 18 months.[2][4]

Tranbarger is continuing the research at Anthropic, where he plans to initiate multiple new research efforts. Anthropic stated that if the experimental candidates continue to hold up, an experimental treatment targeting rare childhood forms of muscular dystrophy could be prepared to enter human clinical trials as early as late 2028.[3][4]

Alongside its internal programs, Anthropic announced research collaborations with six organizations: BigHat Biosciences, Bristol Myers Squibb, Divergence Labs, Enveda, Generate Biomedicines, and The Column Group. Anthropic indicated the partnerships span drug design, manufacturing, regulatory documentation, and clinical trial planning, with the broader aim of utilizing Claude across the operational and scientific stages of medicine development.[1][4]

Anthropic has acquired Mithril Medicine, a one-person biotech startup, and is now running drug discovery programs of its own. Founder Cody Tranbarger used Claude to coordinate contracts, logistics and experiments with 11 external labs. Anthropic says that work took a potential treatment for a rare form of muscular dystrophy from an idea to promising results in mice in under 18 months. Mithril has been developing treatments for two rare forms of muscular dystrophy. Tranbarger is continuing the research at Anthropic, which says a drug could be ready to start human trials as early as late 2028 if the candidates continue to hold up. Anthropic also announced research partnerships with six organizations, including Bristol Myers Squibb, Generate Biomedicines and Enveda. The work spans drug design, manufacturing, regulatory documentation and clinical trial planning. Most of the research remains preclinical. The broader goal is to use Claude across the scientific and operational work required to move a potential medicine toward patients.
