Axios Pro reported that payments giant Visa was in late-stage negotiations to acquire crypto custody and stablecoin infrastructure firm Fireblocks for approximately $2.5 billion. The deal would have marked Visa's first acquisition in the stablecoin sector as traditional financial institutions expand their footprint in digital asset custody and payment rails.[1][4][7][9]

Fireblocks swiftly pushed back against the report. The company told The Block and Cointelegraph that the claims were "news to us, and not true at present time." Visa declined to comment on the acquisition rumors and speculation.[2][5][6][8][9]

Anonymous sources told CoinDesk that Coinbase had also been viewed as a prospective buyer, noting that sale discussions surrounding Fireblocks had circulated over the preceding three to four weeks. Coinbase also denied any involvement in a potential transaction.[3][9]

A sale at the reported $2.5 billion price tag would represent less than a third of Fireblocks' previous public valuation. The custody provider raised $550 million in a Series E financing round in January 2022 that valued the business at $8 billion.[9]
