Standard Chartered pushes $2 trillion stablecoin forecast back to 2030

Standard Chartered has delayed its forecast for the stablecoin market reaching $2 trillion from 2028 to 2030, pointing to plateaued supply growth despite surging transaction activity.

Standard Chartered has pushed back its projection for the stablecoin market cap to reach $2 trillion to 2030 from 2028, citing stalled supply growth this year, according to reports by The Block and Coin Telegraph. The bank maintained the $2 trillion valuation target itself, while noting that current supply has stalled near $309 billion for roughly a year.[1][2][3][4]

Despite the stagnant supply, usage metrics continue to climb. Standard Chartered Research data sourced from Allium shows stablecoin on-chain transfer value averaging nearly $10 trillion per month in 2026, up from $4 trillion in 2025, with circulation velocity doubling to 30x.[2][3]

The bank identified four distinct stablecoin markets: emerging-market savings, developed-market transactions, crypto markets, and AI-to-AI payments. Standard Chartered highlighted developed-market transactions, led by USDC, as the most contested segment, noting that USDC also leads in AI-related transactions as competition among issuers increases around reserve yields.[1][2]
