Sony topped second-quarter expectations with approximately $21.7 billion in revenue and $3.94 billion in operating profit, bolstered by strong chip sales and entertainment successes despite declining PlayStation 5 hardware volumes.

Sony Group Corp. posted second-quarter revenue of around $21.7 billion and an operating profit of $3.94 billion, exceeding analyst estimates and prompting an increase to its full-year profit outlook, according to Bloomberg reporter Takashi Mochizuki. The Verge reported that quarterly net profit climbed 44% year over year to $2.84 billion, while Analytics Insight reported a 45% jump in operating profit aided by strong performance across Sony's entertainment and semiconductor divisions.[1][7][2][8]

Entertainment releases contributed significantly to the quarterly gains. The Independent and Tom Warren pointed to the theatrical success of Sony's blockbuster film Spider-Man: Brand New Day as a major earnings driver. In gaming, digital software continued to dominate, with PlayStation digital game sales reaching 78% of total game sales, according to iPhone in Canada. Engadget also noted that Sony sold more PS5 games despite market conditions where consoles remain costly and supply has struggled to satisfy demand.[6][3][5][4]

Console hardware sales presented a mixed picture. Sony sold 2.6 million PS5 units during the September quarter, down 35% from the 4 million units moved during the same period in the prior year, Warren reported. Even with that yearly dip, Bloomberg noted that Grand Theft Auto VI sparked a jump in U.S. console sales, particularly lifting demand for the PS5 Pro, as broader industry supply faces pressure from rising memory chip costs.[1][7][3][8]
