Nintendo rules out further Switch 2 price increases as console sales slide

Nintendo has stated it has no plans to roll out another Switch 2 price hike following a difficult September quarter marked by rising component costs and dropping hardware sales.

Nintendo has addressed consumer concerns by stating it has no plans for another Switch 2 price hike, according to reports from VGC, IGN, and Polygon. The announcement follows a challenging fiscal second quarter in which rising hardware component costs and a lack of major game releases cut into earnings, leading to a 16% year-over-year decline in net profit to $468 million.[1][4][5][10][11]

Hardware momentum slowed noticeably over the three months ended September 30. Nintendo sold 2.67 million Switch 2 consoles during the quarter, down 41% from the same period last year and lower than the 3.82 million units moved in the preceding quarter, CNBC reported. For the first half of fiscal year 2027, total Switch 2 sales dropped around 37% to 6.49 million units.[1][7][8][9]

Analysts and reporting point to rising memory expenses and recent price adjustments as key drivers of the slump. In the United States, a $50 increase brought the console's price to $499.99, according to Quartz, which also noted the company has absorbed most tariff costs rather than passing them on. Despite the hardware decline, game software provided a counterweight: Nintendo sold 24.49 million Switch 2 games in the first half of the year, a 19% increase that brought lifetime Switch 2 hardware sales to 26.35 million units.[2][3][6][9][12]
