Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang joined Windows and Devices chief Pavan Davuluri at an event in San Francisco on October 7, 2026, to unveil the Surface Laptop Ultra. Powered by Nvidia's RTX Spark platform, the high-end PC starts at $2,599 for an 18-core CPU model with 24GB of unified memory and 512GB of storage. Pre-orders have opened ahead of general shipping on October 16, 2026.[2][1][7][9][12]

The Surface Laptop Ultra is designed to execute AI models and agents locally without relying strictly on cloud compute. Hardware options include 18 or 20 CPU cores, up to 6,144 GPU cores, up to 1 petaflop of AI compute, and up to 128GB of unified memory. The device features a 15-inch MiniLED touchscreen reaching 2,000 nits peak brightness, comes in at under 18mm thick, and introduces built-in magnetic USB-C charging. Microsoft also unveiled a Surface RTX Spark Dev Box with 128GB of memory priced at $5,999.[6][7][11][13]

Directly targeting Apple's MacBook Pro, Microsoft claims the laptop processes local AI prompts twice as fast and generates video six times faster than a comparable MacBook Pro M5, though The Next Web noted Microsoft has not published benchmark test data. Alongside the laptop, Microsoft announced Windows Hybrid Intelligence, a capability entering testing that lets Copilot access local PC files and execute system actions, while dynamically routing tasks between local models and the cloud.[3][4][5][8][10][14]
