Greece approves 10% crypto capital gains tax and 15% DeFi levy
Greece's parliament has passed the country's first comprehensive digital asset tax framework, introducing a 10% capital gains tax on crypto profits above €500 alongside a 15% levy on DeFi income.

Greece's parliament approved a bill establishing the country's first comprehensive tax framework for digital assets, according to Reuters reporter Lefteris Papadimas. Under the newly passed legislation, cryptocurrency profits will face a 10% capital gains tax, though individual gains of up to €500 per year are exempt from the levy.[1][2][3][7][8][11]
The framework also includes a 15% tax on income generated from decentralized finance. In addition, CoinDesk reported that investors will have a 12-month grace period to declare historical crypto earnings without facing late-filing penalties, even as questions persist over how the government plans to treat crypto-to-crypto swaps.[5][6][9][10]
According to Coin Bureau, the law takes effect on January 1, 2027. Under these rules, spending cryptocurrency on goods or services triggers a taxable event, while token-to-token swaps will not, and annual net losses exceeding €500 can be used to offset future crypto profits for up to five years.[4]
