Cointelegraph seeks buyer following steep traffic decline, reports say

Cryptocurrency news outlet Cointelegraph is seeking a buyer after a sharp drop in web traffic driven by an October 2025 Google search penalty, according to CoinDesk.

Cointelegraph, one of the cryptocurrency industry's longest-running news publications, is exploring a sale according to a report by CoinDesk citing a person familiar with the matter. The outlet, known for using cartoon-like illustrations to cover news, has been shopping itself privately, though the asking price has not been disclosed. Cointelegraph has not responded to requests for comment.[1][2][4]

The push to find a buyer comes in the wake of a severe slump in web traffic. CoinDesk reported that a Google manual penalty in October 2025 cut Cointelegraph's organic search traffic by approximately 80%. Similarweb data shows that monthly visits subsequently plunged from more than 12 million in December 2024 to just over 700,000 by early September 2026.[2][3][4]

Founded in 2013, Cointelegraph employs more than 200 people. Crypto Briefing reported that the traffic collapse illustrates the risks of search engine optimization penalties, which have depressed brand value and created significant challenges for potential suitors in digital asset media.[2][3][4]
