China's GDP expands 4.5% in third quarter as AI hardware exports drive growth

China's economy grew 4.5% year-over-year in the third quarter of 2026, beating expectations as booming AI-related hardware exports helped counter sluggish domestic consumer spending and property investment.

China's gross domestic product expanded 4.5% year-over-year in the third quarter of 2026, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics of China reported by Nikkei Asia and Economic Times. The figure topped the consensus forecast of 4.4% and accelerated from 4.3% in the second quarter. Growth was largely driven by booming exports of artificial intelligence hardware, which helped offset persistent domestic weakness.[1][2][3][4][5]

On a sequential basis, third-quarter GDP increased 1.2%, up from 0.9% in the preceding quarter, according to market analyst Scott Melker. For the first nine months of 2026, cumulative GDP growth reached 4.6%, placing China on track to meet the government's full-year target range of 4.5% to 5.0% without implementing major new stimulus measures.[2][5]

Domestic activity painted a more fragile picture. Industrial production rose 5.5% in September, but retail sales increased by only 1.1%, while fixed-asset investment contracted 7.2% year-to-date. Financial briefing platform Finimize cautioned that with domestic consumer spending soft and property investment slumping, China has grown increasingly reliant on foreign appetite for AI hardware, leaving the broader economy vulnerable if global tech spending moderates.[2][4]

What you need to know about markets today 👇 1️⃣ China’s economy grew a better-than-expected 4.5% last quarter, powered by booming exports of AI-related hardware. But with consumer spending weak and property investment slumping, China is increasingly reliant on global AI demand – leaving it vulnerable if the spending boom slows. 2️⃣ Elon Musk pledged roughly $10.8 billion in SpaceX shares to American children, while Anthropic plans to put 5% of its stock into a public benefit fund. The moves come as Anthropic prepares for a potentially record-breaking IPO, with investors weighing its soaring valuation against slowing revenue growth.
