Apple has officially opened Retention Messaging to all developers in App Store Connect, enabling apps to deliver offers, custom images, and messages to users attempting to cancel auto-renewable subscriptions, as reported by 9to5Mac's Marcus Mendes and MacRumors. The company announced the general release on November 4, 2026, in a post titled "Now available: Retention messages for subscriptions."[1][4][5][6]

When a subscriber attempts to end their membership, a "Confirm Cancellation" screen appears showing the date access would terminate, alongside developer-chosen incentives designed to curb churn. Options include exclusive discounts, cheaper subscription tiers, a free trial month, or reminders highlighting features users will lose. Examples show promotional pricing such as $2.99 for three months before renewing at $4.99 per month, paired with an "Accept Offer" button next to standard "Cancel Subscription" and "Keep Subscription" actions.[1][3][5]

The tool was first unveiled as an API at WWDC 2026 and previously required a closed beta sign-up and registration process. With the broad rollout, developers can configure retention flows directly within the Subscriptions menu in App Store Connect without writing custom API code or relying on third-party services. Developers can define subscriber eligibility and screen timing, while tracking outcomes through a dedicated Retention Messaging report.[1]

Apple just opened Retention Messaging to all developers in App Store Connect. Here's what you need to know. Developers can now show a message, image or discount offer when a user goes to cancel an auto-renewable subscription. Apple announced it on November 4, 2026 in a post titled "Now available: Retention messages for subscriptions." This used to be harder to get. Apple first launched the Retention Messaging API at WWDC 2026, and access opened in stages after that, with a closed beta and a registration step. Now there is no beta and no sign-up. Developers can set it up directly in App Store Connect, with no need to build on the API or use a third-party tool like RevenueCat's retention feature. To find it, open any app in App Store Connect, go to the Subscriptions section and scroll down. Developers can set which subscribers are eligible and how long to wait before the message appears. The older API is a server-to-server service, and there is also a Retention Messaging report that shows how users respond. What developers can offer: - A cheaper plan or a downgrade option - An exclusive discount or a free month - A reminder of what the user will lose The cancel button stays. Users can still cancel, they just see one more screen first. Some developers say good cancellation flows are a solid income source. Some users worry it could turn into a maze, and one developer has asked Apple for bulk setup of promotional offer prices. Key numbers: - Announced November 4, 2026 - Rolled out to all developers, no beta or registration - Works on auto-renewable subscriptions Apple's goal is to cut subscription churn, and it is now a built-in tool for every developer.
