Germany's Sparkassen savings bank network has officially begun rolling out cryptocurrency spot trading directly to retail customers through its banking application, according to multiple industry reports. The integration enables depositors to buy, sell, and store digital assets directly without needing an external third-party cryptocurrency exchange.[1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

The service supports trading for Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and Solana, with CoinGape reporting that POL is also available on the platform. CoinGape also reported that DekaBank is handling custody for the crypto assets, and that a broader rollout across the institution is scheduled through the first half of 2027.[1][2][6][7]

Estimates of the banking network's customer reach vary among sources, with figures cited at 40 million, 42 million active depositors, and up to 46 million customers. The initiative functions under supervision from German regulator BaFin and aligns with the European Union's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework.[2][4][5][7][8][9]

Germany's Sparkasse banking network is opening Bitcoin trading to 46M customers. I think this is a bigger deal than people realise. When people can buy BTC directly through their existing bank, the barrier to entry drops significantly. They don't need to navigate crypto exchanges or learn a completely new platform. The more accessible Bitcoin becomes, the faster its adoption can spread beyond the crypto industry and into mainstream finance. Adoption doesn't happen overnight, but this is exactly the kind of integration that can accelerate it.
