Oracle, Broadcom and SpaceX seek tens of billions in debt to fund AI chips, reports say

Broadcom, SpaceX and Oracle are pursuing tens of billions of dollars in debt financing with lenders including Apollo and Blackstone to buy AI chips and fund custom computing hardware, according to reports by The Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times and Bloomberg.

Broadcom, Oracle and SpaceX are each pursuing large-scale debt packages to fund artificial intelligence processors and infrastructure, according to reporting from The Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times and Bloomberg. Broadcom is working to arrange more than $50 billion in financing for a custom AI chip it is co-developing with OpenAI. Private credit lenders including Apollo Global Management and Blackstone have held talks to participate in the financing, which would back OpenAI's Jalapeno chip under its internal Nexus program rather than an equity round.[2][3][6][9][10][11][12][15]

SpaceX is separately in talks to borrow $40 billion to purchase Nvidia chips, according to the Financial Times and Bloomberg. The financing package, led by Apollo, is structured to include roughly $10 billion in bank loans and $30 billion in investment-grade debt, with the transaction expected to close in 2027. SpaceX had previously shown prospective investors a two-page memo featuring space imagery and proposing data centers built somewhere in the universe, following an August statement by Elon Musk that SpaceX planned to build exclusively on Nvidia architectures.[1][4][5][8][13][14][16][17]

Oracle is also in talks with Apollo and Goldman Sachs to finance a major chip purchase, per The Wall Street Journal. The credit deal is intended to bridge the gap between when Oracle must pay upfront for computing hardware and when cloud computing revenues begin to flow in.[2][6][7][9][15]
