Solana core developer Anza announced that the Alpenglow consensus upgrade is scheduled to go live on Solana mainnet-beta on Wednesday, October 21, at approximately 14:50 UTC. The transition represents 18 months of development and is planned to take effect in a single-slot migration. Outlet SolanaFloor characterized Alpenglow as the network's largest consensus upgrade to date.[2][3][4]

According to reports by Wu Blockchain and Crypto Banter, Alpenglow replaces Solana's existing TowerBFT consensus mechanism with Votor. The primary goal is reducing transaction finality from roughly 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds, an estimated 85-fold improvement. The protocol is also designed to tolerate up to 40% of network stake going offline.[2][3][4]

Under the new system, validators will exchange votes directly off-chain instead of submitting them as on-chain transactions, freeing network capacity for user transactions. As a result, reported Solana transaction totals that count validator votes may see a significant decline. Alpenglow previously activated on testnet on September 24 and devnet on September 25, while Crypto Briefing reported that the changes are aimed at boosting network efficiency and resilience.[1][3][4][5]
