OpenAI is acquiring developer tools startup Pierre Computer for an undisclosed sum, the company told Axios. The deal aims to expand OpenAI's AI coding platform, Codex, by integrating Pierre's Code Storage feature directly into the service. Pierre's technology is already embedded within Codex, where its Trees and Diffs libraries power file browsing and change reviews.[1][2][6]

The acquisition positions Codex to compete more directly with Microsoft's GitHub by pushing deeper into core developer infrastructure where code is stored and managed. As software development increasingly shifts toward autonomous AI coding agents, OpenAI is securing the underlying tooling to support agent-driven workflows.[3][4][5][7]

The move comes shortly after OpenAI introduced Pando, a proprietary Git backend that the company said slashed median code-push latency by nearly 80%. Under the terms of the deal, Pierre Computer's existing open-source projects are set to remain open source.[4]
