Elon Musk acknowledged on Nov. 2, 2026, that the cost of serving Grok Bot was "unsustainably high relative to revenue," speaking out after subscribers voiced frustration over unexpectedly rapid usage limit depletion. Musk explained on X that the AI service was too expensive to run and could not be priced high enough to generate a profit, though he did not provide specific cost figures or promise an upcoming usage reset.[1][2][3][4]

The restrictions were intentionally instituted over Halloween weekend, according to Walter Bloomberg. Users reported erratic meter spikes, with weekly usage counters jumping from 50% to 100% without any additional activity on their part. The throttling followed a direct plea from user Doge Norway requesting a usage reset because subscribers were exhausting their allocations far faster than anticipated.[4][6]

The operational crunch emerged even as SpaceX, which was linked to the bot in reporting by Business Insider and Forbes, reported that artificial intelligence accounted for 52% of company income, with its Super Intelligence unit producing $431 million in profit. In parallel, competitive alternatives have begun capitalizing on the friction; Nous Research highlighted migration options to its open-source Hermes agent, providing tools to transfer Grok Bot routines, skills, and memory into local and cloud setups.[3][4][5][6]

Elon Musk said the cost of serving Grokbot was unsustainably high relative to revenue, and users are now moving to Hermes agent. Musk made the statement in a reply on X on Sunday, November 2nd. He said Grokbot was too expensive to run and that it could not be priced high enough to make money. He gave no cost or revenue figures and promised no usage reset. The reply came after Doge Norway asked for a Grokbot usage reset, saying many people had hit their limits this week and much faster than expected. Hermes agent is a free, open source, self hostable agent released under the MIT license by Nous Research. Nous posted a Hermes migrate Grokbot reply that moves a Grokbot setup over to Hermes. Scheduled routines become Hermes cron jobs, skills come over as Hermes skills, and memories merge into Hermes memory. According to Nous, Hermes runs on the user's own machine with the model they pick, including local models. Nous is also revamping its Hermes agent subscriptions. Every plan now includes a cloud instance, and daily and weekly usage limits replace a single monthly block.
