Elon Musk floats space data centers after Democratic election wins in Texas
Elon Musk said data centers in space are looking increasingly appealing after Democrats secured key midterm election victories, including an upset win by Democrat Gina Hinojosa in the Texas governor's race.

Elon Musk suggested shifting digital infrastructure off-planet on Wednesday, posting on X that "data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now." The remark followed election results showing Democrats flipping both the Texas governorship and a U.S. Senate seat in the state, alongside reported Democratic sweeps of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.[1][3][5][6]
The election of incoming Texas Governor Gina Hinojosa has intensified scrutiny around artificial intelligence and computing infrastructure in the state, which hosts roughly a quarter of planned U.S. data center capacity. Market commentator Shay Boloor noted that Hinojosa has called to pause new data center construction until local communities have greater oversight and developers fund more of their infrastructure costs, a stance that could put 13 gigawatts of planned Texas projects at risk.[1][2][4]
Musk was not alone in reacting to the shifting regulatory landscape. Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko posted on X advising developers, "If you are in data centers, pivot to crypto," as election outcomes sparked fresh debate across technology and financial markets regarding the future pace of AI infrastructure development.[2][4][5]

The AI trade is apparently dead again after last night’s blue tsunami but I think this is another example of the narrative following recent weakness in stocks rather than anything actually changing about the demand for compute. Yes a democrat winning Texas governorship given that about a quarter of planned U.S. data center capacity sits there but Hinojosa isn't saying AI infrastructure can no longer be built in Texas. All she wants is to pause new development until communities have more control and developers cover more of their infrastructure costs which is very different from permanently banning new projects. What actually changes is how quickly and cheaply new capacity can come online (not demand for compute) which could actually make already-powered sites more valuable while increasing importance of on-site power generation, electrical distribution and efficiency as developers look for ways to keep building.
