Microsoft has developed an artificial intelligence tool designed to evaluate medical cases sequentially, mimicking the step-by-step diagnostic process used by physicians. According to a study published in Science, the system outperformed general physicians, solving complex medical cases more than twice as accurately as human doctors while also lowering diagnostic costs.[1][2][3][5][6][7][10]

The platform, known as the Diagnostic Orchestrator, is powered by GPT-5 and deploys specialized agents that simulate panels of expert doctors. The Verge reported that Microsoft claims the tool can reach diagnostic accuracy up to four times greater than human clinicians. Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman told the publication that the company aims to build an AI system indistinguishable from human performance in the next couple of years.[4][8][9]

By using a staged diagnostic flow, the AI analyzes patient histories, selects appropriate tests, and refines conclusions iteratively. Following the initial research, investigators are preparing further testing in Boston and plan to assess the system's ability to triage patients waiting in emergency departments.[2][5]
