Google expands voluntary buyouts across five countries to rein in AI spending
Google has expanded voluntary exit packages to employees in Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and Switzerland as Alphabet seeks to manage costs driven by massive artificial intelligence investments.

Alphabet's Google expanded voluntary employee buyout offers across five countries this year to manage expenses amid surging investments in artificial intelligence, according to a report by Reuters. The program, which was widened in June, applies to employees based in Canada, France, Germany, Japan, and Switzerland.[1][2]
Eligible staff are being offered an exit package equal to one month of pay for every year worked. However, the program appears to exclude key divisions central to the company's AI initiatives, notably Google Cloud and AI research unit DeepMind.[1]
The move reflects industry-wide pressure to rebalance headcounts while financing hardware and infrastructure expansions. Big Tech operators Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta are on pace to spend $735 billion this year, largely on chips and data centers. The week prior to Google's expanded buyout reports, Microsoft offered a similar exit package to roughly 60,000 employees, representing about a quarter of its workforce.[1]
