OpenAI says ChatGPT reached 1.2 billion weekly users as ads top $1 billion annualized rate

ChatGPT reached 1.2 billion weekly active users and roughly 20% of Google's search query volume, while its advertising business crossed $1 billion in annualized revenue within 200 days, according to OpenAI consumer product lead Adam Fry.

ChatGPT has reached 1.2 billion weekly active users after adding 200 million users over the past two months, according to OpenAI consumer product lead Adam Fry, who shared the figures with Alex Kantrowitz of Big Technology at an OpenAI dinner in New York.[1][2][4]

OpenAI internal metrics also claim that ChatGPT's search-like queries have reached approximately one-fifth, or 20%, of Google's search volume. In addition, ChatGPT logs 250 million weekly voice users, including dictation, and generates 1.5 billion images per week.[1][2][3][5]

On the financial side, ChatGPT's advertising business surpassed $1 billion in annualized revenue within 200 days of launching. Subscriptions topped 50 million months ago and have grown considerably since. OpenAI also plans to combine ChatGPT's Chat and Work modes in an upcoming update.[1][4]
