Anthropic reports $16.8 billion in quarterly revenue and adjusted profit ahead of planned IPO

Anthropic disclosed to prospective investors that its third-quarter revenue surged to $16.8 billion alongside achieving adjusted profitability and positive free cash flow, though a quarterly growth slowdown to 45% fueled broader valuation concerns across AI stocks.

Anthropic told prospective investors during a presentation at its San Francisco headquarters that its third-quarter revenue rose to $16.8 billion, up 45% from the prior quarter, according to reports by the Financial Times, Bloomberg, and Reuters. The artificial intelligence developer, which separately reported revenue of $4.7 billion in the first quarter and $11.6 billion in the second quarter, stated that it achieved profitability on an adjusted basis and generated positive free cash flow.[1][2][3][9][14][18]

The company also shared metrics showing an 85% gross margin, an adjusted operating margin exceeding 11%, and a net revenue retention rate of 900%, Quartz and Bloomberg AI takeaways reported. Anthropic is aiming for a valuation of more than $2 trillion ahead of a planned public debut, with formal marketing set to begin as early as the week of November 9 and trading potentially starting before Thanksgiving.[13][14][15][16][18]

During the meeting, leadership addressed safety themes, discussing 'thinking' caps and asserting it does not expect human extinction, Reuters reported, even as early draft S-1 materials included risk disclosures regarding technology threats. Despite the profitability claims, Crypto Briefing noted the company continues to record GAAP losses.[4][10][11][19]

The disclosures elicited mixed reactions across the market. The Financial Times noted Anthropic's growth pace was slower than some backers anticipated, while Barron's reported that the update worsened an existing AI stock selloff. Walter Bloomberg reported that the deceleration from earlier triple-digit growth to 45% stoked doubts regarding massive AI sector valuations, weighing on premarket trading where shares of chip and storage providers AMD, Micron, Sandisk, Seagate, and Western Digital slipped 3% to 4%.[5][7][8][12][17]

The key concern: Slowing AI growth, rising interest rates and mounting debt are putting pressure on the sector.
